Hello all! My name is Shuly and just today was I accepted to be GYBBIS team leader with City Year Seattle. I have no yet spoken with any volunteers and I would love to start making some connections. I'm in Mass right now and even thought the training began a few weeka ago Seattle told me to stay out here until the week long academy training in Boston starting in August instead of flying me to Seattle and back again. I have a ton of questions, but if any current or previous senior corps memebers want to let me in on some of the things I mgiht be missing by not being part of the training for a while, that would be awesome! I also have never been to Seattle before, but I hear great things about the city. Where are good places to look for living, any tips on public transportation of farmer's markets, etc? And any information at all that anyone wants to share with me about GYBBIS or their expericnes on GYBBIS or as a team leader would be great to hear. I'm really excited about being part of this and I can't wait to get out there!

Hello, all! (well, the few that are a part of this commuunity :/)
I'm a highschool senior seriously thinking about joining Americorp. The thing is, I'm not sure exactly when I should join it. At the moment I want to join Americorp after highschool, when I'm 18/19 yrs. old, then start college up after that. My Dad says I should get in atleast a year of college first then join, but I'm not sure. What do you guys think, from experience or just thinking about it, I should do?
Do alot of people start after highschool, or after college?
thanks a bunch, Shannon
The Red Cross
Well, after my last post, I thought that I would get the ball rolling with posts.
I finished my environmental initiative for the summer term for AmeriCorps. The project was not what I expected and seemed to be more grunt work than actual preservation of natural habitat and education.
In the last month I have applied for another AmeriCorps position with the Red Cross. The recent hurricane in New Orleans put back their selection process, but I received a call two days ago, to see if I was still interested in the position, which I took as a good sign. I have two friends currently working for the Red Cross, one currently stationed in Lousiania to help with the relief effort who has given me glowly reports on how rewarding working for the Red Cross can be. SO even though the position I am applying for is mostly office work, I am still hoping that it pulls through.
How is everyone eles in this community doing with their service intiatives? Feel free to share. Current Mood: accomplished
It looks like a few new people have joined the community. I just wanted to welcome them in, as well as encourage anyone with any stories or insight into service work to please post. Current Mood: creative

I am about to leave for my serivice with AmeriCorp. It is the Keepers of the Land Project which is run through the Department of Natural Rescources here in Iowa. I am excitied about going, but have a few reservations. This week I found out that two of my friends left the PeaceCorp under a cloud. Although I know it is not AmeriCorp, I wonder if I will run into similar problems. Oh well, I guess only time will tell. Current Mood: full

I got accepted to my first choice site for AmeriCorp. I will be working with the DNR in Iowa. The project is to help improve the state parks and should at least get me started. The position is only seasonal, so I will have to look for another site afterwards, or finish my application for the Peace Corp. I am currently just waiting to hear about the final paperwork.
Seeing that their are now other people in the community I just wanted to welcome them and hope that they are doing well with whatever service project that they are doing. Current Mood: accomplished

Hello. My name is Grace. I am a twenty something college student currently living in the southeast United States. I have been thinking about joining the Peace Corp or Americorp for several years now and think it may be time to take that plunge. It is very refreshing to see a community such as this one in existence on the internet. Often the online seems very shallow and self absorbed, however knowing their are like minded people to myself out in the world gives me hope for the future.

Greetings potential members of this community. I created this community, because I am currently in the application process with AmeriCorp, the PeaceCorp, and City Year. When I deceided upon this choice, I looked for communities on lj, seeing really none, I deceided to create my own to reach out to others who are thinking of joining, have applied, and those who are or have been in service programs. It is my hope that this combination of people will lead to an open discussion to talk about different experiences, advice, and concerns that some people may have.
